The American people aren't really that worked up over retailers backtracking on diversity, equity and inclusion as corporate values. They're mad that the retailer no longer wants them.
I feel like you hit the nail on the head with this one. Oddly, the same feeling (dopamine hit) I used to get at Target I now find at Menards. I know John M is a dick, but the people who work in my local store are knowledgeable and generous with their time. I always leave feeling like my little project will make my life better. And you’d better believe that I track my receipts and always mail in for that 11%. Target was just becoming terrible, and as a Minnesotan that was a bitter pill. I’d even had a Target Visa card for years but closed that account.
I think one thing that really put Target in peoples' bad books was them readily backing down over Pride merch -- a year or two or was it 3 ago? I know that I found that was an affront from a brand that was built by appealing to the sensibilities of queer customers. The backtracking on DEI was really just the final nail in that cowardly coffin. It's hard to see how they win those customers back.
